Mind Machines, also known as Sound and Light Machines are electronic devices designed to create relaxation or other mood changing effects through the use of sound and light stimulation. Light and sound patterns synchronise to relax and focus the mind.

Building on research from the 1970's using flickering lights, and later binaural beats and hemispheric sounds, which established that brain rhythms could be entrained by external patterns.

Think of images of flickering fires and drums at native ceremonies, and the effect they have on the participants.

How to use a Mind Machine

Select a session, put on the headphones and psychedelic glasses, sit back listening to drum like sound pulses, enjoy the experience, which can be for relaxation, stimulation, meditation, reduce tension and anxiety, enhance learning/concentration as well as meditation and visualisation, sleep, improve sports performance, body/mind awareness, quick refresher, release the day or just for fun depending on the session.

Quite a lot of professionals in the fields of medicine and psychology use mind machines as added treatments for their patients and clients.

Effects of Mind Machines

I have experimented with several products and would recommend the Orion as a good (and inexpensive) introduction. It uses specifically tuned patterns of gently flickering lights and softly pulsating sound to help the mind shift into a non-ordinary state. It has 23 different pre-set programs, and manual control frequencies. It's weirdly amazing.

You also get a specially encoded CD with full, co-ordinated programs and you can purchase other Audiostrobe CDs from an expanding library. There is also a setting to allow you to use your own music, or even to live music or sounds around you.
You can also set the frequency manually.

Flashes co-ordinate with music in three ways:

1. AudioStrobe Orion is fully compatible with AudioStrobe-encoded CDs, whose inaudible signal precisely synchronises the lights with their audio content.

2. ColorPulse When connected to any audio source, the music beat will control the light flashes, turning regular music into a kaleidoscopic light show.

3. MicroPulse A built-in microphone translates external sounds into ColorPulse signals. Use with your home stereo or at live music events, with Orion's convenient belt clip.
